New love. A newfound home. And a betrayal that could destroy it all.
Lora has finally found a home among the Drakes—a new family bound by loyalty and unwavering love, anchored by both her long standing friendship with Kierra and her growing bond with Kalon. Amid the chaos of the Shade invasion, she feels a rare sense of security, a peace she never thought possible. But peace is fragile, and the conflict between the Shades and the Drakes is far from over.
When the Shades unleash a terrifying new weapon capable of obliterating entire armies, Lora and her friends set out on a perilous journey to find a lost library that may hold the key to stopping it. But as they search for answers, Lora’s world is upended. Trust is shattered and the life she had begun to build begins to fall apart.
As love, loyalty, and survival blur together, she faces impossible choices—choices that will push her toward a painful truth. In the end, Lora will have to decide how far she’s willing to go to protect the people she loves, even if it means losing herself along the way.
This gripping sequel, Into Flames and Shadows, brings you deeper into a world of treachery and passion, where every choice comes with devastating consequences and Lora’s heart may be the deadliest weapon of all.

An assassin in the palace. A prince in her path. A choice that changes everything.
Fallan has spent her life preparing for one mission: kill the Tavarian Emperor. Disguised as a concubine, her deadly skills are hidden behind graceful bows and stolen smiles. But survival in the imperial palace means more than navigating court politics—it means using her waterborne magic to outwit rival concubines and earn the Queen Mother's approval.
When a night of espionage turns to chaos, Fallan saves the life of Emeric, the Emperor’s estranged son, by killing his would-be assassin—his own brother. Mistakenly believing Emeric orchestrated his death, the Emperor rewards him with an extraordinary gift: Fallan herself.
As she grows closer to Emeric, Fallan finds herself drawn to his strength and kindness, a dangerous vulnerability that threatens to unravel her mission. With her heart torn between revenge and love, she faces an impossible choice: fulfill her destiny and doom the man she loves, or abandon her people and risk the wrath of an empire.
In a world of betrayal, power, and forbidden desire, the line between duty and passion blurs. And for Fallan, one wrong step could cost her everything.

I am in shambles AGAIN! Shelby Oval knows how to write and boy does she know how to leave you hanging! I want to throw my kindle across the room! 😂 Her books are officially neck and neck with ACOTAR for me which is HUGE. The banter, the fighting, the push and pull of Lora and Kalon 🥵 I just cannot put into words how good these two books have been and now waiting for another is going to ruin me! If you enjoy books by SJM and JLA then this is up your alley and this series is next to blow up. I’m promising you. Being front and center at the beginning of such an incredible journey is an honor! I’m trusting you Shelby Oval.. give me that third book! 🥰

I want to start off by saying that I was absolutely blown away by this ARC and Shelby's writing style. My bestie recommended a couple of her other books a while ago; I hadn't gotten to them on my never ending TBR. IYKYK. When Shelby reached out to me asking if I'd liked to read the ARC for her newest book I knew I had to say yes. The Emperor's Assassin follows Fallan, a powerful assassin with one mission - kill the Tavarian Emperor. She goes undercover as a concubine trying to earn her place in the imperial palace. There she faces challenges where she uses her water magic to stay alive and fight her way up the ranks. Her mission is going to plan until she meet Prince Emeric, who she comes to realize is unlike his brothers and father. He cares. As thier relationship grows things start to become much more complicated and the fate of her kingdom hangs in the balance. Will she chose the prince willing to give his life for her or does her loyalty belong solely to her home?

This book is addictive! It is SO GOOD!
Aahh! I was so excited when the author reached out to me with details on her book, I read the blurb and knew it was right up my street. What I didn't realise was how much I was going to enjoy this! And there is dragons!
The plot was intense and all go from the very first page, I loved being flung straight into the action while the world was built around the scene. Such talented story telling and world-building! The way the story unfolded and truths came out, I was gasping, laughing, crying, and everything in between.
Both main characters are so complex, and both changed from standoffish, sometimes arrogant and hesitant, to becoming trusting and trustworthy. Icy hearts were unthawed and the enjoyable forced proximity plot does what it does best.
The descriptions and explanations of the worlds, landscapes, character features, and mannerisms were so intricate and so beautiful.
All my life I have loved to read and immerse myself in my wild imaginings. As I grew up I used different genres of books to escape the trivial perils of everyday life but my favorite stories were those involving magic and heroism. Harry Potter was my first real taste of magic and by the time I was in my twenties I became fully invested in High fantasy (specifically the subgenre of Romantasy).
As I devoured books suggested by BookTok and ‘Author’s Lounge’ I found that a lot of times the strong female leads started off weak and in need of guidance from their male counterparts. By the end of the stories they had come into incredible power, only to lose it all in order to save the world. These tropes are fine – and believe me I still tear through books that have this – but I have grown rather bored with the idea of females needing men really at all on their quest for greatness/destiny.
So, one day as I traversed a mountainous trail with my partner I conceived the idea of Lora: a headstrong, already powerful female, full of rage and might. She is stubborn, yes, but she is brave and courageous and moral – all things that help her help herself. Does she make friends along the way that guide her and help her unlock parts of herself? Sure. Are they only men? No. Lora navigates war, abuse, and betrayal as she works to find her kidnapped friend and gain her freedom. The story includes a romance – because who doesn’t love a good romance – but it also features the growth of female friendships and self-discovery, which I believe is equally important to showcase.
For Lora, the road ahead is going to get pretty rocky, but she will have not only her own internal strength, but people that care about her to help her manage the challenges I plan on throwing her way. The Shadowfire series will be a five-book series, which may or may not cross over with another series in development. I feel as though I have so many stories to share with so many diverse characters. I create each new character as a tiny piece of my soul brought to life on the page, and I can’t believe others get to be part of my wild imaginings with me.
If you are looking for a strong female lead who is already confident in her own abilities and is determined to protect those she loves at any cost, Out of Embers and Shadows is for you! Out of Embers and Shadows is already available on Amazon (as an ebook and paperback) using this LINK, and Into Flames and Shadows, book 2 in the Shadowfire series, is being released soon! I have included both blurbs below, as well as my social media handles and the link to my website and newsletter (where you can get exclusive sneak peeks into the Shadowfire world!)
Q: Shelby, your book dives deep into war, betrayal, and uneasy alliances. Can you introduce us to Lora and what makes her such a compelling heroine?
Unfortunately, Lora is not the heroine. She is morally gray and begins to realize throughout the book that she might actually be a villain, which of course rattles her. But it does not stop her from being herself - since there really isn’t anyone else she’d want to be anyway. While she’s coming to grips with the fact that she might be a war criminal she does start to realize that she could maybe, just maybe, turn her life around. I think the duology of good and evil that rages within her is one we have all felt before - doing the wrong things for the right reasons… except we probably haven’t committed atrocities on her level.
Q: Relationships are at the heart of every great fantasy—can you tell us about the key dynamics between Lora and the characters she meets along the way?
Lora has never had anyone in her life that she has cared about or who has cared about her except for her friend Kacey - who gets beaten and kidnapped when they are teenagers. O to enter into a unit that treats each other with respect and kindness is something literally out of this world for her. She is drawn to several of the cadre that offer her unconditional support and love and its been so fun to write those relationships blossoming. Small warning - in book three (which is being written now) shit hits the fan with some of those people sooooo….. Yeah, sorry in advance.
Q: Without spoilers, which relationship surprised you the most while you were writing?
I genuinely cannot answer that but I will say that as I wrote book two and now book three the characters have decided things for themselves that I did not see coming. I know that sounds crazy to say but it’s true. I just hope no one hates me for how they want their stories to be told.
Q: How do love, loyalty, and betrayal weave together in Out of Embers and Shadows?
The same way they do in life. They are always interconnected because without loyalty in love there will always be betrayal and without love in loyalty you cannot help but betray someone. I think the blurring of what is considered betrayal and what isn’t when it comes to loyalty to oneself and one's values is where the real fun lies.
Q: If Lora had to choose between forging trust with an enemy or protecting herself at all costs, what do you think she’d do?
In OES I think she is still in self preservation mode. She has spent her life being abused and used and neglected and so when she is offered a chance to escape that reality she will seize it - not because she trusts the other person, but because freedom is something her survival and sanity depends on.
Q: What do you hope readers take away from the relationships in this story—romantic or otherwise?
A huge underlying current in all the books I write is unconditional love - whether it's between friends, family, or partners. I hope that my readers, as they continue with Lora’s journey, begin to understand that concept. Love should not have to be earned - trust, yes - but love, true love, is freely given and maintained.
Q: What can you tease about where these relationships might head in the next installment?
I don’t want to give anything away but let's just say not everything is as it seems. These characters really do whatever they please and boy do they have some things in store for the readers!
Q: Which character would be most likely to betray someone first—and who would be least likely?
Lowkey it depends on what betrayal means to you… I think Nuva would not hesitate to kill Lora if she thought it would protect Kalon or Kierra, but I think the same of Lora towards anyone who would hurt Kacey.
Liam is an angel. He must be protected at all costs THOUGH he does follow orders.
Q: If your characters had to live in our modern world, who would thrive and who would be completely lost?
Lora and Nuva would be arrested for disorderly conduct for sure. I think Kierra would thrive but be downright distraught at all the wars and refugee issues. Liam would find modern medicine to be an absolute wonder and I think Garrison would end up being a psychologist or something. Lord knows what Kalon would do…
Q: Which side character is secretly begging for their own book?
Ortega. I think gouging out your own eyes so as to not be used by the temples for your gift of prophetic sight is something not many could or would do.
Q: If you could ship Lora with any hero from another fantasy series, who would it be and why?
I think what Lora truly needs in a life partner is not something that is often written into fantasy books…but if I had to I would say Creon from Lisette Marshall's Court of Blood and Bindings
Q: What’s the most emotional scene between two characters that you wrote in this book?
There is a scene where she just gets to feel pretty and she has never had that chance before. She also gets to sing and dance and be a person - not a weapon - and that was really beautiful to write.
Out of Embers and Shadows follows a woman navigating a fiery landscape in which rival nations are engaged in war as she simultaneously faces the truth about her past. Where did the idea for this novel come from?
In truth the idea stemmed from a long hike where I considered dragons and war. As we hiked both up and then back down a mountain in Slovenia I distracted myself from the grueling steepness by imagining dragons and the dynamics that would be at play if I had a dragon and others did not. Then I began to build a war around that idea and thus the Shadowfire series sparked to life.
How did you balance magic and its use throughout the story to keep it believable?
Magic is alive everywhere and for fantasy readers, I think it’s important to make it as a part of the characters as breathing is. Lora doesn’t just have shadow magic when she needs it, she feels the pulse of her power along her arms, in her very blood. She uses shadows that are already there and her magic dances with the flames from Emir or Garrison. Magic is not simply used; it is in every fiber of these characters’ being. I think having it that way helps to make the world more immersible and the magic more believable.
Lora is a memorable main character. What was the inspiration for her traits and dialogue?
I LOVE reading books that have strong female leads who are unapologetically themselves (Think Jude from Cruel Prince or Aelin from Throne of Glass). As I started really diving into the fantasy genre, I realized a lot of the female leads still leaned heavily on their male counterparts – either to train them or support them emotionally. I got tired of this so instead of searching for a book that had an already confident and highly skilled female lead – I wrote one!
Can you give us a peek inside book 2 in this series? Where will it take readers?
Book 1 is such a whirlwind and book 2 immediately picks up where book 1 leaves off. You follow Lora and Kalon as they grapple with their new “relationship” all while Lora is trying to rediscover herself while still running from her past. There are definitely more twists and turns in this one and I am excited to see how readers react to certain actions and revelations!
